Asterisk 1.8 T1 w/ PRI + analog fax

It’s been a while since I posted, so I want to come out swinging.  I recently put together a phone system for a medium office.  They have a standard T1 and a 4 port FXS Digium card.  The analog card is for a PA system and two fax machines.  This post is a quick tutorial with examples for installation.

Goals of this post:

  • Configure Digium T1 w/ PRI
  • Configure Analog card channels
  • Asterisk Dahdi setup

This tutorial assumes you have a somewhat recent working build of libpri, dahdi, and Asterisk.

How to setup auto-provisioning for Polycom SoundPoint IP phones using the Asterisk Appliance

The Digium Asterisk Appliance has built-in features for handling Polycom SIP handsets.  It’s very easy to do and will save you the trouble of individually configuring the settings of each phone.  I have a Digium AA50 configured with a standard dial plan and a Polycom Soundpoint IP 501.

Goals of this Post:

– Configure AA50 Polycom Provisioning
– Configure Polycom SoundPoint IP 501 phone

Asterisk 1.4.23 and Queuemetrics 1.5.2 fully support Dynamic Agent Login

The standard method of configuring users in Asterisk 1.2 and early 1.4 was to define an agent in the agents.conf configuration file.  This agent is tied to no particular phone or SIP extension.  When the Agent log’s in he is prompted for three things by the dial plan application, ‘AgentCallBackLogin()’:

1. Agent Number
2. Agent password(defined in agents.conf
3. Dial Back Extension

AgentCallBackLogin makes a lot of sense if CSR’s(Customer Service Representatives) switch phones frequently.  For some of my customers this is the case.  However, most of the Call Centers I’ve deployed have assigned seating.

So I commonly get the question,  “Is it possible to have ‘one touch login/logout’ for my agents?”  The sad answer is no.  It’s a valid question; for agents that never leave their desk why do they need to enter three prompts to login?

Asterisk Appliance AA50 firmware upgrade

I got an Asterisk Appliance from VoiceIP Solutions for the purpose of writing up some labs.  I just got my hands on the unit and the first thing we are a going to do is upgrade the firmware.  I’m going to start by plugging my laptop’s ethernet into the LAN port on the Asterisk Appliance.

The unit I’m working with is AA50.  You can only get the firmware by registering with Digium.  Which is inconvenient.  Not a very open policy for an open source product.  In any case you must obtain the current AA50 uImage-1.3.0.1 image for browser upload.  Which I won’t lie… it is not easy.  There is a clearly marked drop down for documentation on the Digium support page.  I easily found the PDF, but there was no link to the firmware.  I ended up using their built-in search bar to find a page with a link to the AA50 firmware. I then accidentally downloaded the CD ISO image first.  I did eventually find and download the firmware.  I logged into the appliance and chose the update tab.

VoiceIP Solutions offers Asterisk PHP GUI for large scale deployments

VoiceIP Solutions
is a Asterisk ‘consulting & deployment’ company in Seattle Washington.  They deploy Asterisk solutions for businesses of all sizes.  From small offices to universities and call centers.  They have sites deployed all over the United States, but mostly on the West Coast.  I’ve been following them for some time; I guess they started deploying Asterisk before 1.2 was released.  I talked to one of their sales rep’s(I think his name was Liam) about the business and wondered if they had done any development work?  He told me that they had done some PHP work for managing larger installs and proceeded to direct me to one of there engineer/developers.
